It offers a second view of the city and its residents from the 19th century forward, honoring the rich heritage of this place near the confluence of the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers, which was transformed from a farming village to a center of commerce by the construction of the Erie Canal. The Cohoes Falls, the largest cataract east of Niagara, made Cohoes an industrial hub. Massive mill buildings, including one of the largest cotton mills in the world, were erected by the riverfront and along a network of power canals.

Cohoes Falls in Upstate NY (Cohoes, NY)

JULY 4th, 2009: Cohoes Falls in Upstate NY is rarely seen at it's fullest capacity as shown here. With the recent torrential rains in the last few weeks, the falls has become overpoweringly beautiful and has drawn many people with their cameras to view this spectacular, unusual scene. Even in the spring, the water coming over the falls at this rate is very short-lived. Cohoes Falls comes in roughly #2 after Niagara Falls for the largest waterfalls in the country!!

VINTAGE 10: WTEN Coverage of Gratto family fire, Cohoes, NY (1978) [PART 1 of 2]

VINTAGE WTEN: Eight people, seven of them children, were killed in a massive fire in Cohoes, NY back in June 1978. Investigators later determined the fire to be arson although an arrest has never been made. On March 25, 2010, it was revealed that investigators had interviewed Virginia Utigard (formerly Gratto), the mother of the children killed and sole survivor of the fire. Investigators had focused on Virginia Gratto right from the start, in part because she reportedly showed little emotion at losing her children.
